The #METOO movement founded by Tarana Burke, helps young women, particularly from sexual violence, speak out on their experiences with intention of there being a Butterfly effect; convicting those who committed the act of violence, aiding the survivors with their idea of “Empowerment Through Empathy” and broadcasting through mainstream that they’re not alone. The Harvey Weinstein scandal was one of the biggest talks in 2017 and in just 24 hours, over half a million people posted on their social media the hashtag #METOO, conceding that they too are victims. As we entered 2018, dozens of young women have testified against their abuser and most recently, cases took stage and a former USA olympic doctor, Lawrence G. Nassar was in the spotlight. Helping to facilitate the conviction is Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, a cutthroat victims’ advocate who opened up her courtroom for young women who wanted to speak openly about their encounter with Nassar and hundreds came forth; putting an exclamation point on the life sentence that he is presumed to receive but is still questionable and will be known within the next 24 hours.
