Cooking in a Pandemic

Similar to many people around the world, the coronavirus has impacted our way of life, whether it be in a personal or professional aspect. Paradise Restaurant owner and chef, Joseph Margiotta, shares how COVID-19 has impacted his small business and what operating a restaurant is like in a pandemic.

Paradise Restaurant has been battling the coronavirus since early March. Owner and Chef, Joseph Margiotta, shares he “closed for the whole month of April” and re-opened because as stated, “didn’t want to put ourselves in a financial situation where we couldn’t pay our bills”. Along with Joseph, Yelp data science states, “abrupt closures, inconsistent reopenings, changes in public health guidance for operations and other state-mandated orders have pushed the food service industry to the brink”.

Data also shows that, “restaurant owners have been forced to quickly come up with new adaptations on menus, points of service, hours, delivery and takeout models that better serve their local communities just to keep the lights on” (ABC News).

With these new laws, Joseph shares how he keeps his customers and staff safe by “implementing safety precautions including separating tables to six feet apart, limit each table to eight persons”. He also shares, “We require the staff to wear a mask and thoroughly clean all seating areas and menus when a table leaves for the next customers to be safe. We require all customers to wear a mask while walking around. We communicate this with signs and we let them know verbally”.

As the saftey and comfort of his customers and staff could not be any higher to Joseph, he lastly shares “we placed hand sanitizers on each table and in the pickup area for the customers use and also acts as a reminder for them to adhere to the rules. We also provide masks for people who forget to wear one and when they come into the restaurant”.
