Summary: This article focuses on the history of blackface and the increasing number of blackface scandals. Several Virginia officials have recently come under fire for wearing blackface in the past. Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam’s college photo of blackface came to light earlier this month. Virginias Attorney General Mark Herring who is the third person in line for the role as governor, also admits to wearing blackface in college. The uses of blackface for entertainment has been used in American culture for almost two centuries. People would uses shoe polish to cover their faces and perform exaggerated performances to make racist fun of black people. It was a way of dehumanizing black people. People have every reason to be outraged by this no matter when it was done. The practice of wearing blackface has a deeply racist history against black people and should not be dismissed.
