ABOUT YOU: Are your bios informative and consistent across platforms? Do they tell us who you are? Does a professional photo accompany your bios?
My bios are not informative and consistent across all platforms. To start, I have 3 main social media accounts: Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok. I do have an X account, but it is what people call a “burner account.” That means it is an anonymous account where my identity is hidden. The reason for that is that I do not really use X to tweet things out; I just use it for news. The only bio that is informative and tells people who I am is on my LinkedIn. I have a nice bio on there with a professional photo from my high school graduation. On TikTok, I do not have a bio, and my profile picture is just a photo of me. On Instagram, the only thing in my bio is “NY,” and I have a picture of myself as my profile picture. So, only LinkedIn has all of those criteria.
CONTENT: What type of content do you typically share? Is it an accurate reflection of your interests as a journalist? Of your general interests? Both?
On Instagram, I share personal photos of myself with friends and family. It is not an accurate representation of me as a journalist, but I do repost things that are interesting to me, like sports or movie-related content. I repost reels that I enjoy watching on TikTok, but I am not active on there and do not post any original videos or photos. For LinkedIn, I post personal accomplishments and repost things I find interesting or useful. However, I mainly use it for networking and internship searching as of now. My social media accounts are more of a reflection of my general interests, rather than my interests as a journalist, and I do not share a lot of content.
FREQUENCY: How often do you post on each platform? How often do you engage with followers?
I pretty much never post on the platforms besides reposts. My last Instagram post was in August of 2024, but I have been meaning to post more as of late, as I only have 6 posts in total, and some of them are pretty old. I have never posted a TikTok video, but I have been exploring the possibility of doing short clips talking about movies or sports and posting them on TikTok. For LinkedIn, I will only really post when I achieve something and I want others to hear about it. I engage with my LinkedIn followers the most as I am always trying to connect and reach out to people. For Instagram, I will like and reply to comments when I post something. Overall, I need to post more, but I believe I am pretty good at engaging with my followers, especially on LinkedIn.
PERSONALITY: What do your posts say about you? Do we get a sense of you as a person?
My posts really do not give a good sense of me as a person. As stated, on Instagram, I only really post pictures of myself with family and friends. I guess the only thing that it shows is that I like to spend time with them. On LinkedIn, I post professional achievements that can show that I am goal-oriented, which is true.
PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS: What about your professional interests? Have you highlighted your journalism skills and career aspirations?
The only account where my professional interests, journalism skills, and career aspirations are located is on my LinkedIn account. I have a clear bio with my career aspirations. I follow many professional accounts on LinkedIn, especially ones that I would be interested in working for. This is because my LinkedIn is really my only professional social media account. My other accounts are more personal accounts, although, as stated, I think I am going to try to turn my TikTok into a professional account.
JOURNALISM SKILLS: Speaking of skills, do posts show any sign that you use social media for finding story ideas and sources, sharing interesting content—including your own reporting—and engaging with your followers?
I would say on my Instagram account. I do not really do any of my own reporting, but I do repost a lot of content from various professional accounts. So, in a way, I am sharing interesting content through Instagram. Other than that, I do not really display any journalism skills on my social media accounts, but it is something I should implement because I am considering going into that field.
