MAIN NEWS ELEMENTS: Interesting

This story might be considered relevant in that Joe Arpaio has continued to run for office several times and this provides insight into his character, but that’s debatable as it’s mostly just a humorous embarassing moment for a man who is no longer in public office. It would not call it useful or helpful to the audience. The primary element here is that it’s interesting, the audience wants to know this because it is funny especially if you hate Joe Arpaio which many people do.

SUB NEWS ELEMENTS: Prominence/Novelty

The primary sub-element at play here is probably novelty, it’s funny and unusual that someone pulled a prank like this. That goes hand-in-hand with prominence, this story went viral specifically because Arpaio is a well-known public figure. There is an element of proximity in that this was originally reported as a local Arizona story but it quickly became bigger than that because Arpaio has received national attention for his past human rights violations.

NPR’s Chris Arnold covered the eviction crisis among the coronavirus crisis with a specific focus on a near-homeless family in Houston. Arnold says that despite the new federal ban on evictions, many renters don’t know how to take advantage of this new rule and are being forced into homelessness.

Print: The article is a reflection of the original radio broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition. It goes further in-depth about the life of the Bumpus family in Houston before, during, and after the coronavirus. It has hyperlinks to cite the data used to support the reporting.

There were two still photos. The first is of the Bumpus family, smiling, at a restaurant. The second photo is of a protest outside of the Harris County Courthouse with signs that read “Housing is a Human Right”, “Tenant Power” and “Stop Evictions.” The protestors look young and are wearing masks. The Harris County Courthouse is where reporter and article contributor Jen Rice has been covering the eviction trial.

In the ABC news article by Devin Dwyer and Janet weinstein I found it was about voting super centers to help combat Covid and have more people vote while following cdc guidelines. It had a few forms of media that was being used to convey a message across.

Print? In the article they had about 4 pictures that help paint the picture for the audience to see what a super center would be and look like. It was nice to be-able to see pictures. They also had one picture of a screen shot fo there video

Audio? The only audio was from the video nothing to special.

Video? The video was very nice to watch it was about 6 and a half minutes long they did a tour of a stadium that can be a super center for voting in the upcoming election. It was great because you can listen to it while you are doing something and still be able to understand the video. It also adds a great visual to it.

Interactive? There were 3 options one to share to facebook, the other to twitter, and the last one to share with someone via email. There was almost a comment section to voice your option or ask questions. There were also 2 ads both targeted towards me.

Main news element

For the main news element in this story it would have to be relevance due to the fact that the coronavirus and its impacts on the upcoming election. This impacts many people because now there could be less mail in ballots and more people now may have the option to go to these super voting centers and feel more safe.

Sub news element

For the sub news element I would have to be impact. This is due to the fact that its relationship to the election and the coronavirus pandemic and how they both tie to it, this article shows us how it could impact someone.

Williams-MMJ

The example I chose to discuss is an 8 part video series called uncomfortable conversations with a black man. A former NFL player and now current FS1 talk show co-host Emmanuel Acho sits down with the Current NFL commissioner to discuss the effects of the racial injustices going on in America. The first episode talks specifically about the kneeling that occurred in 2016 during the national anthem in 2016.

WHAT TYPES OF MEDIA ARE PRESENT IN YOUR EXAMPLE:

  • Print- Throughout the video there as subtitles at the bottom of the screen that is on automatically. At the end of every video, the name of the Series shows up at the end to let you know the video ended. And in the description section, you get some information on the current video.
  • Audio- There is no way to get the audio without video for this.
  • Video- Video is in a two-person setting showing the interviewer and the interviewee going back and forth with dialogue.
  • Interactivity- 57 second Grammarly ad, Grammarly ad to the right of the video, 1-minute drippluggin ad, 63% ad in the top right. Up next with the next video ready and autoplay on. 75 recommended videos on the right-hand side. You can click on the profile to go to more videos. There is also a link to purchase the interviewer’s book in the description.

Interest is the main news element I would choose because a topic like this is researched off interest even though it is relevant most people will watch because of interest. I would choose conflict as the sub-element because this action of kneeling has lead to enormous amounts of conflict.
