“I’M TOTALLY SOBER”

Driving under the influence has affected many people’s lives and families. In this generation where alcohol is cheap and very accessible, many tend to abuse it. These people who abuse alcohol is known as drunk drivers because after taking three or four drinks they still believe that they are not drunk and go behind the wheel of their vehicle without thinking of what will happen next. Drunk drivers are willing to risk their lives and the lives of others because they are ashamed to call a family member or even a friend since they’ll fear they’d criticize their actions. Drivers have a responsibility while drinking and driving. Drunk driving is a problem today in the United States. People need to be aware of the consequences it effects on people and realize drinking and driving is an issue and needs to stop. It’s understandable that you and friends want to go out, but make sure to have a designated driver if not uber/lyft. Would you rather waste $15-30 on a cab than wasting it on lawyers, fines, DDP (Drinking Driver Program), etc? It’s simply not worth it. What some people don’t realize in the midst of the moment sure you’re all having fun but while having fun things tend to go overboard and without even realizing bam you’re in the vehicle with someone who probably isn’t conscious of what they’re doing. How do you think your family would feel if you weren’t to come back home at all. The sorrows of your death will have your parents question themselves in why letting you go out that night. The amount of enmity that your parents would have towards the driver if they were to make it alive and you are gone.

Down below is a link to a story of a woman who had a night out with friends, killed 3 and ended up in Eastern State Penitentiary.

THE MAN WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT RACE

Have you ever heard of someone going through culture shock in their own country?

I sat down and spoke with Tiago Machado, a first generation Portuguese-American man from  Massachusetts, about how growing up with a limited knowledge of race shaped his life and the person he became.

Despite his oblivious upbringing, Tiago transformed into an advocate for marginalized people in his college career while part of the 4MILE program at Bryant University, becoming heavily involved in his school’s Multicultural Student Union. Tiago followed his passion for learning about and sharing multicultural experiences out of college and into his professional life.

In 2013 Tiago became the Assistant Director of Multicultural Programming at Westchester Community College, and created platforms for cultural experiences for student to engage in on campus. Although he is no longer in that role, Tiago still works to ensure there is action behind education. Tiago runs a leadership program for students to directly hear from and give back to their community.
