Espinal – Podcast assignment

Shaquille O’Neil is one of the most popular human beings on the planet. His distinguishing personality and dominance on the basketball court have paved the way for opportunities like Inside the NBA and the Big Podcast with Shaq. He’s joined by Rob Jenners and John Kincaid in a podcast that updates viewers on pop culture and the sports world. What separates this podcast from others are its original games and fun segments instead of the traditional 2 guys talking for an hour. Popular segments like “Borderline” which shows clips on the internet of people’s words that can be misconstrued in a negative connotation and “Buzzer beater” are only some of the few ideas that stand out against other regular podcasts.

Like I mentioned before I like the games that they play and the guests they put on the show. Shaq is a well-known guy so he’s had guests ranging from Julius Erving, Chris Paul and even Kim Kardashian. In this podcast he’s talking to Aries Spears, famous comedian and great impressionet is on his show promoting his upcoming tour. They talk about how Aries got his start on the comedy scene and how Shaq was an important piece to his success. It was very interesting to hear one of my favorite comedians got some help from an NBA star. One of the things I don’t like on the show is Shaq is never in studio. It is true that a guy like Shaq must have tons of responsibilities but most of the podcasts are done with skype. So the audio is delayed and Shaqs late reactions can sometimes ruin the flow of the show.

With that being said it’s still a great show with a great range of topics and guests that i can see everyone enjoying.

BOWEN- PODCAST ASSIGNMENT

Fans of Arsenal Football Club are some of the most passionate and diverse on the planet. However, they all share the same feeling for Arsenal football Club: Frustration. One of the channels that receives the most exposure on YouTube is ArsenalFanTV. However, through minimal research, a viewer is able to find dozens of small YouTube channels dedicated to tackling the challenge that supporting Arsenal football club. One of those was the ABW Radio show, which is uploaded as a Podcast. It describes some of the reasons Arsenal F.C. are in crisis and are being taken less seriously as a European superpower.

This podcast episode unlike traditional radio broadcasting because it involves the entire array of the English language, and does censor any of the true feelings of Arsenal fans. Typically, on television most of the ex-Arsenal players or experts describe Arsenal fans as ‘idiotic’ and ’embarassing’ for their behavior, however, on this podcast, the listener is able to understand exactly why the fans are unhappy, unlike the radio where the guest will most likely sugarcoat the situation in order to keep quiet on the serious matters.

On February 15th, Arsenal visited the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany to contest for the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. In previous years, Arsenal visited the stadium and got acceptable results, winning 2-0 in 2013 and drawing 1-1 in 2014. However, they were eliminated in both years and every year since. This did not however stop the Arsenal board from claiming Arsenal would be on the level of Bayern Munich by 2015. This claim seemed to be valid in the 2015/16 Champions League, when Arsenal defeated Bayern by 2-0 in the Emirates Stadium. However, a few weeks later in that season, Arsenal lost 5-1 in the groups to Bayern, and the following year, 5-1 once again in the exact same stadium. This series of disappointing results has prompted Arsenal fans to express their discomfort with the manager and management of their football club. Some of the complaints in the video I agree with is at 35:55 when Arsenal’s season is described. Hopeless, repetitive for the past 13 years, and comical for rival teams. They want the manager to stay at the club so that Arsenal continue to lose. Also, the 33:20 Robben’s signature move which I have ‘experienced’ when watching Arjen Robben play against one of my favorite team, Real Madrid CF. This movement of curling a shot with his left foot is expected and trained to defend by rival teams, however Arjen Robben always seems to score in this manner, as he did in 2011/12 to eliminate Real Madrid.

I agree with the fan’s negative energy towards what is being done in the club, as it is brutally honest yet civil at the same time.

One of things I disagree with however is at 42:15 when a fan claims Arsenal should have shifted strategies to keep the game more tight. One reason this is debatable is because the Arsenal system of all players staying in defense was working. So “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”. It was only until the main defender, Koscienly was injured, that Arsenal’s defense was weakened. However, Bayern’s 4 unanswered goals are no reason for Arsenal’s attack to not be criticized. Arsenal barely attacked all match, when none of the attackers were injured or affected by the goals conceded. Therefore, it is easy for a fan to say after the match that “the lack of change in team strategy” was the cause of defeat, but during the actual match they were content with the result.

It is common for fans of Arsenal FC to contradict themselves because they frustrated with the club and want change in general. For this reason, I can understand their frustration and agree that changes should be made after a result of this magnitude; however believe they should be more willing to back their team for the remainder of the season instead of take out their frustration on the team they claim to care so much for. 50:15 is testament to how Arsenal fans are left with one last hope, the cup, and should be happy to support their team in order to win it.

Naturally Nicole With Nicole “Snooki”Polizzi
NN-Ep111-Nicole&Joey From The Shore.
In this episode Nicole talks about her new music video. She was inspired by Amy Schumer to make a music video, which is silly and funny. She also talks about their weekend at the Jersey shore house, Nicole’s high school reunion and celebrity gossip. This podcast is different from what you hear on the radio because they have no limit to what they can say. They can curse and say whatever they want because it’s their show. There is also no time limit so they can talk as much as they like without being rushed. I like Nicole podcast because Joey and Nicole are really down to earth and they talk about topics that interest me. Something I don’t like about the show is that it’s really short; Most of their podcast are only 30 minutes long.

Fleck-Podcast Assignment

The Podcast that I listened too was Ear Biscuits on SoundCloud and it is unlike traditional radio in the sense that the podcast I run by two people who are on YouTube. The two people interview other fellow YouTubers or YouTuber celebrities and ask them questions on their lives growing up, what got them to make videos on YouTube, and what they have done so far. In this podcast episode they interviewed a YouTube gamer and asked him about his childhood, why he shares his personal life with fans, the passing of his father and how it has shaped him, and showing his emotions on camera that are not rehearsed. In the beginning of the podcast they played an audio clip from a game that he had played which got him to become a very popular channel on YouTube. This is what made this podcast different from traditional radio for they would not play an audio clip of someone playing a game as a way to introduce the person to the audience.

The podcast flowed like a regular conversation between three people and the two people interviewing had very hard questions and made the person think of their response. At some points they brought the person back on topic, but there were points when they asked questions that were simple and some questions that didn’t needed to be ask for they did not make sense with the main focus of the story. However, as a whole the podcast was very well done and gave light to people who are fans of the YouTuber gamer on subjects that they might not have known about him.

Colonna – Podcast Assignment

The podcast I chose for this assignment was a segment from “Cosmo Happy Hour” which the podcast portion of Cosmopolitan Magazine. I chose an episode that focuses on mental health and the importance of keeping your brain healthy. It also focuses on the stigma that surrounds mental health.

I enjoy not only this episode, but the entire podcast because the host, Elisa Benson, has fun with the topics. Not all of the episodes are about serious things, in fact most of them are fun topics. I think that’s how this podcast differs from traditional radio broadcasts. Since the podcast is from Cosmopolitan Magazine, it is to be expected that some of the topics aren’t radio appropriate.

These podcasts also feature guests depending on the episode. In the mental health episode I focused on, the guests were Dr. Susan Biali, medical and wellness expert and founder of The Den Meditation and singer Mary Lambert. I thought these guests were beneficial because they provided different perspectives on mental health.

Fennell – Podcast Assignment

The podcast I chose is Welcome to Night Vale. It is a fictitious news station that focuses on the town of Night Vale where supernatural events take place. It is told in the style of a radio station in the town in the sense that it follows what is considered news but like Orson Welles famous War of the Worlds record it isn’t true. News stories include a dog park where people and pets are not welcome due to hooded figures however the story assures the listeners it is safe as long as they don’t get near or look…

I like the podcast because it is a story, almost like an audiobook while keeping a radio like atmosphere. The podcast resembles a radio station but tells a story of a town that plighted with strange events and attempts to normalize this news like it’s something we would hear on the way to work or school. Its a pretty interesting and fairly unique even adding a bit of music like you may hear on a real station.

NORRY-PODCAST ASSIGNMENT

The podcast I listened to was called “Everything You Need to Know About the Survivor Game Changers Cast”. It was hosted by former Survivor contestant Rob Cesternino on his website, Rob Has A Podcast, which features podcasts about many reality TV shows. In the podcast I heard, Rob, along with journalist Josh Wigler, and his mom, Rose-Anne Cesternino, talked about their opinions on the cast of the upcoming 34th season of Survivor, which is called Survivor: Game Changers.

Like traditional radio, they were reviewing something that’s going to be on TV and voicing their thoughts on what could happen. However, it was incredibly focused on one show for most the time. Speaking of which, the podcast ran for almost an hour and forty minutes, which is different from traditional radio because most radio programs don’t last longer than an hour. Also, there weren’t any songs or commercials in the podcast at any time, although Rob did talk about one of his sponsors before he called in his mom.

I personally enjoyed the podcast because Survivor is one of my favorite shows and I’m really looking forward to watching the new season. I liked how Rob, Josh, and Rose-Anne talked about all the contestants, who are all returning players. However, I would’ve like to hear them say a little more about some of the people that weren’t discussed as much as others.

Rahman – Podcast Assignment

The podcast series that I chose was a BBC Global News podcast. The current story of this BBC subject matter is the leader of North Korea and the mysterious death of the leader’s half- brother. The decease happened to occur in a Malaysian airport but the probable cause of death is unknown at the moment. Speculations of the possible cause of death were poison darts. The possible motive is based on the future leadership of the country North Korea. King Jong Nam had more westerner and capitalist views that happened to be distasteful to his father’s appeal. The reason why this podcast is different than others is because of the controversy of the isolationist country. The uniqueness of this podcast is coming from the spoken piece from the BBC Network.

What I liked about this podcast are the many perspectives to look at world issues. That certain countries are mentioned with their critical issues and to know what’s happening in another country besides our own. The opening of the leader of North Korea’s half-brother found dead from assassination is a very alarming subject. The only thing I don’t like about the podcast is that the subject matter subsides to another country and can’t be fixated only on one country.

Maldonado- Podcast Assignment

For this assignment I chose to listen to an episode of “The Steve Austin Show-Unleashed” hosted by former professional wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin.  The episode I listened to was titled “The Bionic Redneck and Other Assorted Tales” in which Austin and his wife Kristin talked about remodeling their home, Steve’s wrestling career, both their families and answered fan’s questions. The show was unlike something you would hear on the radio because of the limited commercials, varying segment lengths and some cursing sprinkled in. Radio broadcasts usually consist of shorter segments with many commercial breaks, so the podcast was a nice change of pace in that regard.

Being a professional wrestling fan from since I was a kid does made me interested in a wrestling oriented podcast but Steve Austin’s is more than just wrestling. He discusses a variety of topics including his everyday life, sports, politics, and more from a relatable point of view.  When discussing a topic he does his best to cover all aspects that interests his listeners which is not always the easiest thing to do. I would recommend this podcast to not only a fan of professional wrestling or Stone Cold Steve Austin but someone who likes a straight forward discussion with some humor and storytelling mixed in.

MORGAN- PODCAST ASSIGNMENT

Laurie Itkin is a financial advisor and wealth manager at Coastwise Capital Group and in this episode she explores the financial issues in a relationship such as: the importance of having separate and joint accounts with your partner, the importance of communicating and being fully transparent about your finances, how to establish the right financial plan for your relationship and financial infidelity and it’s impact on relationships.

This podcast is different from a traditional radio program in that there are no commercial breaks and I am able to listen to the program from start to finish without interruptions, the program is not being live-streamed and I was able to start, stop and resume it whenever I like and  it also differs in that topics like these are not usually highlighted on traditional radio because it caters to a specific audience and the radio caters to broader audience so they tend to focus on the wider issues. I thoroughly enjoyed this program as I found Miss. Itkin to be very engaging and I appreciate the fact that she was forthcoming about her personal experience in order to get her message across to the audience. I also found her advice to be fair, honest and informative as it relates to financial management, I learned a lot from listening to her. I also enjoy the interactivity element as I was able to comment on the program which made me feel like they valued my opinion about the episode discussed and of course, I was able to share this podcast on twitter so that is a plus. I dislike the fact that the podcast seems to be more of an interview rather than a discussion, I believe that the topic in question would have been more interesting if it was a discussion and different points of view were explored.
