Eating Cake, Drinking Tea and Talking About Death

In 2011, an Englishman named Jon Underwood popularized an idea for a new type of event based on existing sociological research into the dying process called Death Cafe.  The idea was simply to provide a place where people could feel comfortable talking about the inevitable and learning from each other’s experiences, beliefs and ideas.  Sometimes there is cake and tea to go along with it, sometimes other snacks, and sometimes only the warmth of human company, but it is never as depressing a place as some would imagine it.  Recently, I spoke with two Death Cafe organizers and attended one event to learn more.

Misconceptions of a Police Dispatcher

Not many people understand the role of a dispatcher, many assume they answer phone calls throughout the shift. Here we look into other duties that are involved being a dispatcher for the county and state.

Police dispatchers make up the first line of communication for the officers that they are in charge of an any emergency services that they have contact with. In this video I speak with Serena and Leslie on what classification of dispatcher they are and how the job functions. We look into what drove them to pursue this career and would they recommend it to anyone else.

THE MIGRATION FROM THE OLD TO THE NEW WOMEN

In this interview, I asked my grandma, Irma, some questions about her life as a first generation immigrant. She began to talk about her childhood, including some of the things her and her family did together. She continued to talk about other important things, such as the newer, stronger role that women in this day in age are starting to fill. She provided great examples of how her life was different than an average modern day millennial.

BONDING OVER BELLY DANCING

“Dancing with Sarah Bell” is a Belly Dance class in Westchester County , New York. Bell says Belly Dancing is often looked at with stereotypical views, including that only thin people can do it.  People forget that Belly Dancing has a rich history dating back hundreds of years, a history that includes women of all sizes. Like any other form of dance, Bell’s students are expected to put on performances and the class has an annual recital called a Hafla.  Cheryl Lowman, a belly dance student, provides her point of view on a Hafla saying it gives her confidence, “Seeing other people perform and getting to the point where I can say I do that. And then doing it.”  As you can see in the video below, Bell says the bonding that happens makes it all worth while.

For more information on class schedules and Bell’s background, here is a link to Sarah Bell’s website.

COMMUNIST REFUGEE TO SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR

Adil Mustafaraj is a local business owner who has owned 4 business since he emigrated to the United States as a refugee 25 years ago. Mr. Mustafaraj escaped from communist Albania fearing for his life; less than a decade later he opened a restaurant business to create a source of income for himself and his family. He gives personal accounts of the journey and challenges he faced throughout the process. I hope to inspire aspiring young entrepreneur’s with Adil’ story. Although Adil was not familiar with the English language and had no high school or college education, he was courageous enough to start his own business venture. I am truly inspired by his story to work hard and not take opportunity for granted and I hope to project that to others.
