Blowing up the White House

During the Women’s March, Madonna had shocked a lot of people during her speech when she made a comment about wanting to blow up the White house. Throughout the speech Madonna was expressing how upset she was that “Good did not win”.

While Madonna’s comment was merely passive, a lot of people took offense  to her comment of wanting to blow up the White House. Fox & Friends believed that she should be arrested for her comment. Madonna believes that her comment was taken out of context, and she had to go on Instagram to explain that her comment was merely a metaphor and that she is all about spreading love.

The article was written well enough; I didn’t notice any grammatical errors. One thing that I would have added to the article however would have been to add some differing opinions from spectators of the speech (if possible), as opposed to just using a screenshot of a twitter comment found online.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4144112/A-Dog-s-Purpose-producer-Gavin-Polone-responds-video.html

In the article I read by the Daily Mail, the author discusses the recent controversy over the film “A Dog’s Purpose.” The movie is set to release at the end of this week but animal lovers are threatening to boycott the film after a video shot in 2015 emerged showing a German Shepherd appearing to be abused by being thrown in fast moving water and at some points even appears to be drowning. You can see how terrified the dog is about getting in the water but the dog handler just keeps trying to shove it in the water and you can hear someone say “you just gotta throw him in” off camera. The article also discusses the movie’s producer, Gavin Polone, opinion on the video. He says that the video was cut in a way that really didn’t show the full story and it’s what you couldn’t see that actually tells the whole story. Under the water there is a diver and platforms used to assist the dog and the dog was never really in any true danger. The way the story was written was very short and to the point making it very easy to follow along with great pictures and video to help show the story. If I could change anything I would change the way some of the pictures are displayed. Some of the pictures were so large it took a full scroll to find the rest of the text and I feel it broke up the text just a little too much, it was almost as though I couldn’t tell when the article was over in the end because of some of the text gaps. Overall it was a great article because it told me both sides of the story, was easy follow along, and gave great visual representation to go along with each part of the story. It also provided a comment section which lead to mostly just slander on the film.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/23/politics/president-trump-live-coverage/index.html

CNN is providing live coverage of President Trump’s first week in office, in a single, streamlined article that is consistently updated as new developments arise.

Beginning with President Trump signing an executive order to withdraw from TPP on Monday, the page includes relevant photos, videos, audio, and text for each item. The streamlined nature, and ability to filter events beginning with the oldest or newest developments adds a small level of interactivity that is important to navigating what will eventually be a very long list of developments.

Although it works in the way it was intended, the page is far from perfect. Given the option, I would add some form of table of contents, or some other way to easily navigate between stories. As it currently stands, stories happening in the middle of the week must be scrolled to. While this isn’t a big deal by itself, clicking the “view more” option a few times gives the page a clunky feel inconsistent with what I imagine to be the intended aesthetic.

The article I chose was CNN’s ”Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines: How did we get here?”

The article covered the recent action by president Trump to begin approvals to restart the highly controversial Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines. The article covers not only Trumps executive actions but the protesters who continue to fight the building of the Dakota line on Native American land. The article uses text, photos, videos and links.

I was very impressed with the scope of the article. It covered a lot of information through different mediums, video being particularly what stood out to me personally. They had a relevant video for each part of the article such as Trump signing executive orders, the protesters and even an interview with a cop about the unethical treatment of protesters. The videos gave the article a good sense of balance.

The article was also complimented by a ton of links to other stories, press releases and websites of the pipeline companies. This made the article very interactive and gave the reader a sense where the writer got his information from and lends credibility.

Source: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/01/21/twister-kills-four-hattiesburg-area-mississippi/96877096/

The people of Hattiesburg, Mississippi are recovering from a tornado that struck on January 20th, 2017. Hattiesburg, MA, population of 48,000, has confirmed the death of at least 4 people in a tragedy where at least 15,000 homes were affected. By providing video and photo-links to social media (such as twitter), Lici Beveridge reports using her personal twitter to describe and present the aftermath. This multimedia formatting of the images in-between the text provides additional information as to the extent of the damage caused, while the video depicts just how severe the town was changed by the disaster. The images, available on twitter, are there for all to see and comment, which provides another quality to online-journalism which radio, TV, and newspaper can’t match.
If I could change any aspect of the original media, regarding type of media coverage, it would be to add audio from the incident. The video depicts how the disaster took place, but no audio of the incident was retrieved. However, given that the footage on YouTube is copyrighted and not available to the journalist (at the hour in which the storms were reported), photographic evidence is sufficient in this scenario.

Fleck Blog Assignment #1

In the article it refers to President Donald Trump signing executive orders on Tuesday. One of these orders was to allow the access of the Dakota Pipeline. This has outraged many people specifically Native Americans who have been protesting against the pipeline and had just recently got the process stopped. However, it remains unclear on how President Trump will expedite the environmental reviews created by Former President Barack Obama. The push to have the pipeline built is that from President Donald Trump and told reporters ,which was shown in the video, “I am very insistent that if we’re going to build pipelines in the United States, the pipe should be made in the United States”. This refers to the Keystone pipeline and the Keystone XL that run through the mid-west into Canada. President Donald Trump hopes that this will create 28,000 jobs for our pipelines “just like the good old days”. In the video of the briefing the White House press secretary told the press “…he wants to make sure that we get this process back on track.” While President Trump was signing the executive order protesters gathered in front of the White House outraged that he is pushing for the pipeline to be built.

What worked best to shown this story was the videos of the protesters, Donald Trump and his press secretary making comments of the pipeline and how they feel about this decision being pushed further. The only thing that could have been added to this coverage would be an interview with some of the Native Americans in the area since they are the ones who will be the most effected by this decision and have been protesting since day one.

This article might seem as though, all they are doing is bashing trump but I see it as fair. In this article, they take direct quotes (off of Donald Trumps Twitter) and put them up against statistics. This election was far from your average election and I assume this presidency will be the same. This article is completely biased, but at the same time is backed by facts and PROVEN statistics and not feelings. Another reason I think this article was well written is because of its layout. Everything is written clearly and links are provided to show where VICE is getting their facts from

O’Brien – Blog Assignment 1

When I first had seen this video, I was very interested to hear not only fan’s reactions to it, but the media covering it as well. This video in question is rapper Young Thug’s new music video for his recent song “Wyclef Jean”. Just like the popular opinion of rap videos mandate, this video has extravagant ideas and funds thrown at it with supermodels and foreign cars littering the video. However, as you may expect the artist to star in the video saying his lines into the camera while throwing money or aiming guns, instead the artist himself was never officially filmed for the video shoot. The video is a complete mess and the director does a great job of turning it into a viral sensation by poking fun at itself, showing that every possible thing that could go wrong with this shoot, did.

The author of this article does a good job of explaining how this video is different from others, using such mediums as print and video. The article has a comments section as well, so readers can engage others with their own criticisms of the situation. If anything could of been added however, it is probably a statement from Young Thug himself, or his label on why they decided to go with such a different type of shoot after all of these problems persisted. Either way as the video states at the end, “None of this matters. The video cost 100,000 dollars and the artist never even showed up. But you’re still watching,” this different way of editing has given fans an insight as to what it is like to work with some of the music industries most difficult situations.

Kyriazis – Blog Assignment #1

While searching for an article to do this blog about, I happened to stumble across one on the Huffington Post’s website entitled, “Donald Trump Promises Investigation Into ‘Illegal’ Voting He Made Up,” and written by Alana Horowitz Satlin.

From a quick glance at the title, one would be correct to assume that the article quickly goes into debunking President Trump’s belief of mass voter fraud this past election – a belief that approximately “3 to 5 million” illegally cast ballots cost him the popular vote. Throughout the article, valid points are found through the many links to outside sources used in gathering the ideas and facts presented. Not only does this article successfully utilize the usage of hyperlinked outside sources and articles, but it also employs the usage of a short video featuring small clips of Press Secretary Sean Spicer and a news commentator discussing the article’s main topic, and tweets of President Trump’s where he, himself, declares his position on suspected voter fraud. This article, also, engages interactivity through its highly active comment section, as well as allowing readers to directly share the article to various social networking sites and email. I think the interactive aspect of the article suited it very well – without it, it probably would’ve seemed overly simple and underdone.

Truthfully, I think the article and accompanying video should’ve been done from a more impartial perspective, showcasing multiple points of view, rather than trying to cast everything in a black and white manner. The fact of the matter is that President Trump’s claims, while outlandish sounding, probably are resulting from, at least, a little more than his apparently very pained ego over losing the popular vote. I found this article to be exceptionally biased, much thanks to broadly stated claims of, “he lied,” rather than simply discussing that numerous studies suggest that he is incorrect. Gathering various studies from multiple angles may have been a better option to avoid bias/making the story seem simpler than it truly is.

Football is a rough sport. When the objective of the game is to level opponents with head crushing blows and hit the other teams players as hard as you can, it’s pretty safe to assume that their might be some lasting effects to the players who decided to turn this sport into a career. That is especially the case with Jets legend and franchise sacks leader Mark Gastineau. In this article I’ve chosen, the former athlete opens up on the multiple brain diseases he is dealing with as the result of his playing career. Some of these diseases include Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.

The article has a link to a podcast Mark did with Pete McCarthy this week, the link is audio only and you can really hear how serious these diseases were by the tone of his voice. He elaborated on how he would end up places with no recollection of how he ended up there, the audio really captures how he feels going through all of that. I would have added a video of Marks highlights to show how dominant he was back in his day to not make the article so depressing. He was an entertaining player who would dance after every sack and really show passion to the game and i feel that got lost a little in the article.
