Fennell – Podcast Assignment

The podcast I chose is Welcome to Night Vale. It is a fictitious news station that focuses on the town of Night Vale where supernatural events take place. It is told in the style of a radio station in the town in the sense that it follows what is considered news but like Orson Welles famous War of the Worlds record it isn’t true. News stories include a dog park where people and pets are not welcome due to hooded figures however the story assures the listeners it is safe as long as they don’t get near or look…

I like the podcast because it is a story, almost like an audiobook while keeping a radio like atmosphere. The podcast resembles a radio station but tells a story of a town that plighted with strange events and attempts to normalize this news like it’s something we would hear on the way to work or school. Its a pretty interesting and fairly unique even adding a bit of music like you may hear on a real station.

Fennell – Blog Assignment #1

The article I chose was CNN’s ”Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines: How did we get here?”

The article covered the recent action by president Trump to begin approvals to restart the highly controversial Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines. The article covers not only Trumps executive actions but the protesters who continue to fight the building of the Dakota line on Native American land. The article uses text, photos, videos and links.

I was very impressed with the scope of the article. It covered a lot of information through different mediums, video being particularly what stood out to me personally. They had a relevant video for each part of the article such as Trump signing executive orders, the protesters and even an interview with a cop about the unethical treatment of protesters. The videos gave the article a good sense of balance.

The article was also complimented by a ton of links to other stories, press releases and websites of the pipeline companies. This made the article very interactive and gave the reader a sense where the writer got his information from and lends credibility.
