The episode is based around the announcement of an upcoming modular gaming console with the ability to play classic and old school games up to the PlayStation 32-bit era with updated graphics and modern features such as live streaming. The Host, Pat “The NES PUNK” Contri discusses his experience with the console demo at the Socal Gaming expo. He describes what details are known about the project, and his thoughts on how he feels that it could be successful while reminding his audience about similar types of ventures from the past.
One major difference between this podcast and traditional radio broadcasting is that the topic that this covers is a niche of niche. Gaming, like many other interests, is just one of many general interests out there. While many would say that it’s “mainstream” these days, like Sports, it’s just one specialized topic. Retro gaming is a subdivision of gaming which fractures the audience even more. If watching the vidcast, you can see that the host, Pat “The NES Punk” Contri is not in a professional studio setting. He’s in a self-made garage/game room with a laptop/soundboard/cam/mic combo doing all of the content creation himself. He is of course, not subject to the FCC and says whatever he wants with only his audience to answer to. Finally, while this is recorded live, it is not broadcasted live, nor does it go over any airwaves. It must be consumed by downloading it directly on your device.
My only major complaint about this is that it’s currently a monotone show. The podcast normally has another person which leads to differing points of view. Pat is not challenged in this at all while recording which only allows his views to be presented. With another point of view, the show is usually more interesting. Other than that, he does use the currently available facts (I’ve researched it personally) and provides intelligent speculation on the topic.
