Perception From Abroad – Rojas-Taylor

Billy Burke is a Healthcare Management major currently spending his fall semester in Sweden. I sat down and found out he has a more more compassionate perspective of the world because of this experience.

Rojas-Taylor Blog Assignment #3

This podcast was recorded on YouTube as well as audio. The duration was 17 minutes with no advertising or interruptions. The owner has a routine of promoting his website for two minutes before getting into the gist of the episode. There is no profit motive or corporate interests involved.

A journalistic element is here because the subject was the controversial release of the movie “The Interview.” Harry Wilmington speaks about Sony getting hacked and threats of violence made towards American theaters. He then correlated the release of the movie to jealousy in dating. It sounds like a reach but makes sense.

People didn’t initially have freedom to see the movie. This in turn lead them to want to see the movie after being told they couldn’t have something. The same happens when jealous boyfriends put restrictions on girlfriends hanging out with other guys, girls, etc. The overcompensation actually pushes the girl towards the other guys by putting the idea in her head and by not giving her freedom to choose.

Rojas-Taylor – Blog Assignment #2

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/26/politics/presidential-debate-hillary-clinton-donald-trump/

The top of this page provides over a dozen accessible videos that show replays of last nights’ debate. There are a few compilations of the most important moments. There are also videos titled with direct quotes from both candidates. CNN did its usual format of titling every paragraph in bold followed by reasonably sized paragraphs with direct quotes. The writer doesn’t deviate from the lead and is more objective than neutral in his content. CNN is known for being the neutral station so it’s nice to see objectivity.

Links to other CNN articles were provided based on fact checking, polling, and one of Clinton’s statement. A podcast of the full debate is available on the page as well. Viewers can share this on social media and email.

I would provide a comment section or polls on the page about the videos. Granted that nasty comments would need to be moderated, but it would open up a debate of ideas. They also provided an unnecessary side link about Trump sniffling during the debate. It has little relevance of substance pertaining to polling or the election’s outcome. Sensationalism is a negative for journalism.

Hillary Clinton recently claimed that half of Donald Trump’s supporters were bigoted at a recent fundraiser. “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.” “Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.” On Saturday she retracted the comments and admitted that the statement was too broad.

The article features her statement and a response video. Vice presidential nominee Mike Pence addressed these claims. “They are Americans and they deserve your respect.” CNN has a screen shot of Trump’s response on Twitter. He stated that he respected all of Hillary’s supporters despite their disinterest in voting for him.

Each paragraph on the page has an appropriate title. The titles are a great addition to the article. I would cut down the Pence video to 20 seconds. It allows the reader to focus solely on his response to Clinton.
